How to Use Voice Assistants for Seniors

You can talk to your phone instead of typing — and it will answer back. Voice assistants are one of the most useful features on any phone, and they're built right in.

What Is a Voice Assistant?

A voice assistant is a helpful program that listens when you talk and does things for you — like making a phone call, checking the weather, setting a timer, or answering a question. You don't have to type anything. You just speak.

🍎 Using Siri on iPhone

How to start Siri

  1. 1
Say "Hey Siri" out loud. You don't need to press anything — just say those two words and wait for a soft chime. Siri is listening.
  2. 2
Ask your question or give a command. Speak naturally, as if talking to a person. For example: "Hey Siri, call my daughter" or "Hey Siri, what's the weather today?"
  3. 3
Listen to Siri's response. Siri will speak the answer aloud and show it on screen. If needed, you can follow up: "Hey Siri, call her on speakerphone."
💡 If "Hey Siri" doesn't work: Go to Settings → Siri & Search → turn on "Listen for Hey Siri." You can also press and hold the side button (or Home button on older iPhones) to open Siri manually.

🤖 Using Google Assistant on Android

How to start Google Assistant

  1. 1
Say "Hey Google" or "OK Google" out loud. Your phone will chime and show a colored bar or circle at the bottom — it's listening.
  2. 2
Ask your question. Speak naturally: "Hey Google, what time does CVS close?" or "Hey Google, call my son."
  3. 3
Listen and respond. Google Assistant speaks back. You can have a back-and-forth conversation — no need to say "Hey Google" again for follow-up questions.
💡 If "Hey Google" doesn't work: Open the Google app, tap your profile picture in the top-right corner, go to Settings → Voice → Voice Match, and turn on "Hey Google."

🔵 Using Alexa (on Any Phone)

Alexa is Amazon's voice assistant. You may already know it from Echo speakers, but it also works as a free app on your iPhone or Android phone.

  1. 1
Download the "Amazon Alexa" app from the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play Store (Android). It's free.
  2. 2
Sign in with your Amazon account. If you don't have one, you can create a free account — it only takes a few minutes.
  3. 3
Tap the microphone button in the app and speak your request. Or enable "Alexa" wake word in the app settings to use it hands-free.
💡 Already have an Echo? If you have an Amazon Echo at home, you don't need the app — just say "Alexa" to your Echo device from across the room.

Tips for Getting Better Results

⚠️ Privacy note: Voice assistants only start recording after they hear their wake word ("Hey Siri," "Hey Google," or "Alexa"). They are not recording everything you say all day. However, if privacy is a concern, you can turn off the always-listening feature in Settings and just use the button instead.
