How to Make Text Bigger on Your Phone for Seniors
If the words on your screen are too small to read comfortably, you can fix that in just a few taps — no glasses needed. Here's how to do it on any device.
Why Adjust Text Size?
Every phone and tablet comes with the text set to a default size that works for most people — but that doesn't mean it works for you. Making text larger is a simple change that makes your whole device easier and more enjoyable to use. It won't break anything, and you can always change it back.
🍎 On an iPhone
-
1Open Settings. Find the grey gear icon on your home screen. Tap it.
-
2Tap "Display & Brightness." Scroll down a little from the top of the Settings list until you see this option. Tap it.
-
3Tap "Text Size." You'll see a slider with a small "A" on the left and a big "A" on the right.
-
4Drag the slider to the right. Slide your finger toward the big "A" to make text larger. The text in the preview above will grow as you drag.
-
5Go back and also turn on Bold Text. Go back one step (tap "Display & Brightness"), then find "Bold Text" and tap the switch so it turns green. Bold text is thicker and much easier to read.
📱 On an iPad
The steps are almost identical to iPhone.
-
1Open Settings. Tap the grey gear icon on your home screen.
-
2Tap "Display & Brightness." Find it in the left-hand menu of Settings.
-
3Tap "Text Size" and drag the slider to the right to increase text size.
-
4Turn on Bold Text. Go back to "Display & Brightness" and toggle on "Bold Text."
🤖 On an Android Phone
Android phones look a little different depending on the brand, but the steps are similar for Samsung, Google Pixel, and others.
-
1Open Settings. Find the gear icon in your app drawer, or swipe down from the top and tap the gear icon.
-
2Tap "Display." It may also be listed as "Screen" on some phones.
-
3Tap "Font Size and Style" (Samsung) or "Font Size" (Google Pixel).
-
4Drag the slider to the right. Move it toward "Large" or "Largest" to increase text size. You'll see a preview change immediately.
-
5Also turn on Bold Font if you see that option — it makes text noticeably easier to read.
Make Everything Bigger — Not Just Text
Text size only affects the words inside apps. If you want everything on screen to appear larger (including icons, buttons, and images), try Display Zoom:
On iPhone or iPad
Go to Settings → Display & Brightness → Display Zoom. Choose "Larger Text" and tap "Set." Your whole screen will zoom out slightly, making everything appear bigger and easier to tap.
On Android
Go to Settings → Display → Display Size (or Screen Zoom). Drag the slider to the right. This makes everything on your screen — icons, buttons, and text — proportionally larger.
Quick Fix: Zoom Into Any Page
Without changing any settings, you can temporarily zoom in on almost anything:
- In your web browser: Use two fingers and spread them apart on the screen (called "pinch to zoom") to make a webpage bigger.
- Photos: Same pinch-to-zoom works on photos.
- Emails: Pinch to zoom works in most email apps too.
